Since the 16th century Luckenbooths have been known as Scotland's love brooch. Generally given by a man to his sweetheart as a betrothal gift or love token, they were also pinned on children's clothing to ward off witches. The intertwined hearts appeared to form the letter 'M' and the designs were often called Mary brooches for Mary Queen of Scots. In the later 1800's, in Edinburgh the brooches began to be called Luckenbooths for the small stalls near St. Giles cathedral on the royal Mile.
